An Introduction

Updated: Oct 8, 2022

Hi! My name is Pennie Ogletree McLean and I am an artist living in Weaverville, North Carolina (just north of Asheville). I thought I would start this blog off by introducing myself, sharing my art background and telling you why I started MOAD Home Marketing.

By the way, I pronounce MOAD like road, load, toad, etc. and it is short for McLean-Ogletree Art & Design.

I am originally from Marietta, Georgia, and one thing to know about me is that I have loved architecture and creating art even from a young age.

The drawing below is from when I was 4 years old, after visiting an A-frame home in Georgetown, Ga. My family saw it as the first signs of a budding artist.

I continued to draw and paint throughout school, taking some private lessons, and I even received some recognition for my art through the years, like having a 3D house model I created displayed in town, winning a contest to design a t-shirt logo, and being named Senior Art Student of the Year (because honestly, the art room was where I spent most of my time in school).

In middle school I became really interested in house plan magazines, and I spent A LOT of time drawing homes and communities. Here are some of my drawings.

I designed a few modern homes in high school, but more recently I have been working on a design that I hope will influence others to build a home and add on to it, versus relocating when they need a larger home.

When it was time to head off to college, I thought about going into interior design, but instead, I landed on a drawing and painting major in my sophomore year. While at Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, I received two art scholarships (the Kuzmicki-McCutchen Scholarship and Mary Rosenblatt Art Scholarship). I took classes in painting, live drawing, and printmaking but I really enjoyed the textile classes that I took in my final two years. Because of this, I started incorporating weaving into my paintings.

My senior show focused on abstract acrylic paintings influenced by architecture, perspective and dimension. I studied Bauhaus artists, and was particularly inspired by their clean modern buildings and ability to combine craft with art.

After college, I worked in marketing and operations at several companies, my favorite being at a real estate office. I was able to tour people's homes, see how they lived, see their different design styles, and walk around their land. I was able to see places that weren't available to the public and take in views that were only viewable from their homes.

I have now decided to do this type of work as a freelance marketing specialist. I am using this opportunity to creatively photograph homes in these beautiful mountains and to share their stories both through this blog but also through paintings that will permanently capture the unique places people call home.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my work with MOAD Home Marketing. Please stay connected to see more of my photography, artwork and writings!
